Installing the Clients

Installing the Client Program (Required)

The following instructions assume that Windows NT or Windows 95 is already running on the client workstation. To install the Windows NT or Windows 95 client portion of ADSM, do the following:

  1. Insert the CD-ROM containing the ADSM Windows client into your CD-ROM drive.
  2. Select Run on the File menu in the Program Manager or the File Manager.
  3. Enter the setup command from the appropriate CD-ROM directory in the Command Line box and click on OK.

You can run setup.exe from the \ADSMCLI\WIN32\INTEL directory on the CD-ROM for single byte languages or from the \ADSMCLI\WIN32\MBCS directory for multibyte languages, or you can enter dsmv3w32 after you download the dsmv3w32.exe file (18 MB) to a temporary directory on a hard drive containing a minimum of 30 MB of free disk space.

  4. You are asked if you want to search for previous ADSM client installations.

If you search for previous installations and an ADSM directory is located, select one of the following:

    1. Install ADSM into the indicated directory. This will install the Version 3 client over a previous installation.
Note:Back up any files you want to retain before you install the client. Existing dsm.opt files are preserved and the new sample options file is copied to dsm.new.
    2. Continue to search for directories with ADSM components, and ignore the one just located.
    3. Delete the contents of the indicated directory, including any subdirectories. If you select this option, it removes directories and files without any further checking.
    4. Stop searching for ADSM components.
  5. Select the installation setup type and the destination directory where the files will be stored.

    Installation Setup Types:
    There are three setup types:
    • Full. This setup gives you the Backup-Archive Client, the Administrative Client, the API, the WebShell Client, and the ODBC support.
    • Compact. This setup gives you the Backup-Archive Client only.
    • Custom. This setup allows you to select the options you need. It also shows the disk space required for each component installation.

Select the clients you want to install. Install support files for your communication method, if support files are required.
Note:You must install the client scheduler if you want to use the automated features of ADSM.

If you select both the backup-archive client and the administrator client, you can install both clients into a single directory or separate directories. If you install into a single directory, the clients share an options file. Clients installed into a single directory must be uninstalled at the same time; you cannot independently uninstall the backup-archive client or the administrator client, unless they are in separate directories.

    Destination Directory:
This directory indicates where the ADSM files will be stored. The default directory is win32app\ibm\adsm on the system partition.

To use a different directory, click on Browse. Enter the location in the box labeled Path and click on OK.
Note:The directory name you select cannot contain a blank character.

The amount of disk space required for the installation options you chose and the amount of space you have available appear at the bottom of the window. Make sure there is enough disk space for the ADSM client files on the destination drive. The installation program will not allow installation to a destination drive with insufficient disk space.

  6. Click on Finish.

For more information on using the ODBC driver and the Administrative client, see ADSTAR Distributed Storage Manager for Windows NT Adiministrator's Guide, GC35-0292.

ADSM in the Windows NT and Windows 95 Environment

The installation process creates a program group. The contents of the program group depends on the client components you chose to install. This program group allows easy access and running of the ADSM client within the Windows environment.

If there are other ADSM clients installed on the same system, caution should be taken when you switch from one client to another because environment variables such as DSM_DIR can be shared by more than one client of different platforms (such as DOS and Windows).

ADSM Files

The options you selected in the Client Setup-Option window determine which files are copied into the directory you specified. Figure 36 lists the files that are copied if you select all of the options.

Reinstalling the Client

To reinstall the ADSM client, we recommend that you use the installation CD-ROM to install any files (the files on the installation CD-ROM are in compressed format).

Start the reinstallation the same way you started the first installation (see "Installing the Client Program (Required)" for instructions).
Note:Back up any files you want to retain before you reinstall the client. Existing dsm.opt files are preserved and the new sample options file is copied to dsm.new.

If you install the ADSM client files in a different directory than the one where you previously installed them, you might want to delete the previously installed files to save disk space.
