Quick Start

Installing the ADSM for AIX Version 3 on AIX 4.1.4 or Later

Use the procedure in this section to install ADSM for AIX Version 3. The components include the server, device support, the server utilities, the ADSM for AIX backup-archive client, the ADSM for AIX command line administrative client, the ADSM for AIX application programming interface (API), and the online books. The three storage pools are allotted 24MB of your /usr directory (8MB each).

The administrative client and the backup-archive client are registered with the server as shown:

Make your selections by using System Management Interface Tool (SMIT) or the Installation Software Manager Tool (both tools are available on AIX).

Figure AB0CT107 not displayed.

The instructions here are for AIX 4.1 and will vary depending on the level of AIX installed.

Refer to Installing the Clients for information on installing the administrative and backup-archive clients on platforms other than AIX. The clients for other platforms can be installed directly from the CD to the desired client platform. If no CD-ROM drive is available to the client platform, the files can be copied to a file server and distributed.

Throughout this procedure, /dev/cd0 is used for CD-ROM. This may be different in your environment.

Loading the server files can take several minutes.

The procedure shown here specifies the steps using SMIT.

  1. Log in as the root user.

  2. From your desktop window, access the System Management Interface Tool (SMIT) by entering:

  3. Choose the following selections from within SMIT:
Note:If you are changing or adding language capabilities, see Appendix C. "ADSM National Language Version (NLV) Feature Considerations". The selection path differs from the sequence shown here when you are changing the language capability.
    	   Software Installation and Maintenance
    		   Install and Update Software
Install / Update Selectable Software (Custom Install)
Install Software Products at Latest Level
Install New Software Products at Latest Level

  4. On the next window, select the device that you are using for the installation. You can enter the drive name in the window or click on List to access the device list.

If you click on List, select the CD-ROM drive that you are using for the installation (for example, /dev/cd0).

For AIX 4.1: The CD-ROM drive must have a file system defined for it, and the file system must be mounted. You can create a /cdrom directory and use the mount command by entering from the root directory:

    Figure AB0CT190 not displayed.

    crfs -v cdrfs -d /dev/cd0 -m /cdrom -pro

    mount /cdrom

To remove the cdrom directory, enter the following:

    umount /cdrom

    rmfs /cdrom

    rmdir /cdrom

  5. Click on OK.

  6. Load the CD-ROM into the selected drive.

  7. Locate the line Software to Install.
Note: The values you set for the locale stanza variables in your /var/adm/ras/bosinst.data file control which translated ADSM messages, help, and ADSM device selection messages in SMIT, in addition to U.S. English, are automatically installed. Languages available are U.S. English, Japanese, simplified Chinese, traditional Chinese, Korean, Italian, Spanish, and Brazilian Portuguese. The server installation defaults to U.S. English. Refer to your AIX installation manual for additional information.

    1. To install all ADSM components listed in the table at step 8, continue at step 10.

    2. To selectively install ADSM components, click on List for the latest available software packages (all_licensed for AIX 4.1 or all_latest for AIX 4.2), and continue at step 8.

  8. Select the ADSM components (server, utilities, license, client, online documentation) that you require from usr/sys/inst.images. The following table lists the ADSM component fileset file names. There are some files on the CD-ROM that are not part of ADSM; those files are not listed in this table.

    Notes:

    1. Available languages are U.S. English (en_US), Japanese (ja_JP and Ja_JP), simplified Chinese (zh_CN), traditional Chinese (zh_TW), Korean (ko_KR), Italian (it_IT), Spanish (es_ES), and Brazilian Portuguese (pt_BR).

    2. You should be aware of the following installation dependencies and some consequences of not installing certain filesets:

      • The licensing package requires that you install the server run time fileset adsm.server.rte.

      • If you do not install the licensing package, you cannot register all the features you have paid for, and your server will be set to an evaluation (try and buy) license, which expires 60 days from the date of installation.

      • The server utilities require the ipf/x library for installation and require Motif to run. The ipf/x library is shipped with AIX and is offered on the server installation CD-ROM as a convenience.

      • If you do not install the adsm.server.gif fileset, the web administrative client will not work.

      • If you do not install device packages, you cannot define ADSM tape, optical or library devices. Also, you cannot use the tape label utility (DSMLABEL).

  9. Click on OK.

  10. Check the default settings for the options on this window.

  11. To continue, click on OK.

    SMIT responds: ARE YOU SURE??...

    Figure AB0CT107 not displayed.

Continuing the procedure may delete information that you want to keep.

  12. To continue, click on OK.

This installation may take several minutes.

  13. After the installation is complete, click on Done, remove the compact disk, and exit from SMIT.

  14. To use the WEB administrative interface, halt the ADSM server and issue this command to load the definition file:

    Figure AB0CT190 not displayed.

    dsmserv runfile dsmserv.idl

    Notes:

    1. You must have at least 4MB of available database to run the DSMSERV RUNFILE DSMSERV.IDL command.

    2. To use the administrative client web interface, the fileset ADSM.SERVER.GIF must first be installed. This subcomponent includes the dsmserv.idl file and all of the image files needed to use the web administrative interface. This fileset is installed with the server if the entire server program is installed.

    3. You must also configure the http communications method in your dsmserv.opt server options file to use this interface.
      COMMMethod HTTP
         HTTPPort 1580

    4. To disable ANR0405 and ANR0407 messages that appear on the screen each time the administrative client web interface connects, issue this command:

      Figure AB0CT124 not displayed.

      disable event console ANR0405,ANR0407

Disabling these messages also improves administrative client web interface performance.
