You request backup services when you want ADSM to save copies of files that you can restore if your original files are damaged or lost. These copies are called backup versions or backups.
You can back up local files on your NetWare servers, files on remote NetWare servers, the bindery, and the NDS.
To back up files to an ADSM server, choose one of the following:
You can include the NDS and the bindery in an incremental or selective backup.
Running incremental backups on a regular basis can ensure that you have recent backup versions of your current files available at all times. Selective backup is useful when you want to back up only a specific subset of your files.
The file types for which ADSM provides backup and archive services are DOS, OS/2, NFS, Macintosh, and FTAM.
If a user accidentally erases a file, or if a file on the NetWare server is damaged or lost, you can restore a backup version of the file from ADSM storage.
You can restore a single file, a group of files, all the files in a directory, the NDS, or the bindery. You can also choose to restore files to the same directory from which you backed them up or to a different directory. You can restore any files you back up and any other files to which another user grants you access.
For more information about backing up and restoring, see Chapter 3. "Backing Up and Restoring Files".
